Just for fun : patchwork felt!

When asked if I took commissions at the crafty cafe I attend in the village my reply was as always ... I don't take orders! But this was different, this was for a child who shares the same heart condition as Sophie and as the lady told me of her nephew I knew I would make this cushion!

With a little heart at the back

Just big enough for a little note!

Life from the back of the pack : Brownies fair trade tea party!

Brownies is a whole new experience for us but the girls love it! Especially when it involves baking!

I guess any excuse to make cake is great!
I learned to pipe using hot mashed potato! Chocolate icing tastes better!
Rebecca's cake!
Sophie's cake - lots of sprinkles!
I think I wasn't the only parent having to sit on their hands watching their 7year old carrying two hot drinks on a tray - envisioning calamity any moment! But they had great fun hosting the party, taking money, waitressing, serving cake and they did really well raising £100 for charity.

A year with the National Trust : Knightshayes

Knightshayes in Devon was a lovely day out, during our Easter break.

The girls had a trail to follow to help them explore the house - which got all of us looking for clues as many were quite challenging! They were then able to watch some books being cleaned and recorded which they found fascinating.

As it was holidays there were activities based on the Victorian fascination with fairies!

So wands made we headed off to find the fairies in the wood!

Momentarily distracted by masses of tadpoles!

Having found the fairies and their wands, we went for a wander in the woods and found a few larger creatures!

It was a lovely place with much to explore, some of which we didn't get too - so a return trip is definatly in the plans next time we are in Devon.

Life from the back of the pack : still baking!

So I got the soda!

And Rebecca was finally able to make the soda bread!

Soda bread is much denser than regular bread and didn't go down so well with the little ones but we enjoyed it!

Life from the back of the pack : The smell of freshly baked bread!

Right now our house smells just fantastic - Rebecca has been baking!

Her project this term is ' where our food comes from ' and the answer is ..... Tesco's obviously! Hence the trip to a supermarket! In fairness they are visiting a producer in a couple of weeks and looking at various elements of food, but it did make me chuckle.

Tescos are doing a food to fork programme and so Rebecca came home with a certificate, stickers and some recipe sheets - which we have to make right now! Several of the recipes were eliminated due to time, convenience and ingredients or lack of, which left bread rolls! And just enough time to make them before brownies!

Ingredients ready for soda bread till we discovered we were missing the soda!!

Ready to prove

Watching them cook

All done and smelling delicious - it's a long time till breakfast!!

And the verdict - delicious! Sophie's comment " it tastes just like real bread!"

Life from the back of the pack : Life in the country

Saturday afternoon found us at a maypole dancing workshop - it was great fun.

Then this Sunday afternoon we gathered on the village green in the neighbouring village Toft for some real country dancing - it was great fun and the girls did brilliantly.

Then we headed off to the local Anglican Church to dress the well!

The Anglican minister shared about the significance of water in the bible and how the bible talks about being washed clean - which concluded with the ministers present showering everyone with some of the water from the well!

A short service in the church drew out the importance of some of these traditions in a village and how they seek to strengthen faith, drawing on issues of community and justice.

Followed by a lovely tea in the manor!

Before heading home!

Having grown up in towns this sort of festival was something we had learned about but never experienced so it was great to be a part of it, and it really was a lovely day.

Life from the back of the pack : What Saturday mornings are for...

Every now and again things all come together at the same time and peace and harmony reign, ok let's be honest... Once in a blue moon in between the arguments, squabbling and shouting!

So today there must be a blue moon ...

Happy Saturdays!!

Life from the back of the pack : The treasure hunt continues

One of the clues on our treasure hunt that we are using to explore Cambridge led us to this 3D map of the city.

Annie would have stayed for ages matching the letters on the labels with the buildings, unfortunately we had chosen graduation day for this visit so the road was packed with graduates and their families!

Having found several clues it was time for coffee, but with Cambridge packed and the usual coffee shops packed we decided to look for some alternatives. We spotted some cafe chairs outside the tourist information - not somewhere we would normally have thought of looking but on a busy Saturday it was worth a shot. We discovered that the tourist information does have a little coffee shop selling proper coffee and with space and seating available. We will definatly head there next time we are exploring, especially as it just happens to be opposite a Cath Kidston shop!!

Life from the back of the pack : promises promises!

Earlier this year Rebecca joined Brownies, followed in March by Sophie

Today they made their promises .....

The girls were both really nervous, and had spent days practicing their promise, but they both did really well and are now enrolled brownies - two hours later I finally finished sewing on their badges!
